Understanding The Big Golf Tournaments

By: James Beckett

It is essential to learn about the big players and the big events in any sport if you want to really get to grips with the sport. After all, where better to view what you should be doing than by watching the best in the business? Let's take a look at the biggest golf tournaments that you should be tuning into:

The US PGA Tour is a collection of games that take place all over America. They last for most of the year and have a wide range of prizes and participants. There are qualifying events which allow you to play in the tour the next year and the actual matches take place throughout the year with major events distributed throughout the year.

One of the four majors, the PGA Championship is actually a part of the tour mentioned above. It is the final of the four major championships and is usually played in August time to round the year off. Winning this (or any other major) gives you a raft of invitations to all the big tournaments and exempts you from qualifying for this one ever again!

Don't forget the other three major events! The US Open, the Open Championship (also known as the British Championship) and the Masters, all with a prize pool of around $7,000,000 each. They are all unique in their requirements, locations and the players who choose to play them. Let's take a look at each:

The Masters golf competition is usually held each year in the month of April at the Augusta National Golf Club in South Carolina. Contestants must be eligible based on 17 different levels before being admitted to the Masters Golf Tournament.

The original coat associated with the Master's competition is a coveted inviting, green tinted single breasted coat that is awarded to the winner of the tournament. One notable fact regarding the Masters competition was that Tiger Woods placed 20 records throughout his 1997 win. One of those records was being the youngest winner of the competition at the age of 21.

Each major seems to have their own quirks, and The quirk for the US Open is that it open to amateurs as well, and it allows men and women to play together. It doesn't even have a lower age limit so in 2006 a 15 year old from Hawaii qualified for the tournament!

The Open Championship, a.k.a. the British Open, is a golf competition thrown at varied golf venues in the United Kingdom. It is usually organized the third week of July. The record for total triumphs at the Open Championship is six, held by Harry Vardon, whose final appearance was in 1914. The Open is the first of all the most well-known golf competitions.
