The History of Archery

By: Burt Cross

Man, from the very beginning, has made devices that can help him survive. These include equipment that he used to kill for food and to guard himself. A prime example of such a a tool is the bow and arrow. This weapon has since been used throughout history. But, as time passed, archery became used more and more for recreation or sport, rather than for hunting.

There are studies that indicate that the bow and arrow was used to hunt for food way back 5,000 years ago. Man gradually developed his skill in this sport, as he became increasingly adept at traditional archery. Throughout the Medieval Period, the traditional use of the bow and arrow had a vital role in most battles, wars and conflicts throughout the world.

Today, traditional archery is used not only for combat, but also for the purpose of sports and recreation. Still, most of the contests on archery make use of modern archery tools, so that traditional archery and its competitive form is gradually disappearing. Whilst traditional archery makes use of only the bow and arrow, modern archery is directed more towards the application of the latest, most up-to-date and sophisticated apparatus. This goes to show that modern archery has more accuracy when compared to the traditional form of archery.

Nowadays, the bow and arrow is typically used for hunting games, such as bow hunting. This game makes use the traditional form of archery, but it also uses new equipment. These consist of gloves, bracers (or arm guards), chest guard and similar equipment. These not only serve to provide a defense, but also to aid the archer in shooting more correctly.

While traditional and modern archery have some differences with regards to the equipment used, they also have several similarities. Obviously, the chief similarity is the use of the bow and arrow. The key principle for the two kids of archery is still the same - that is, to hit the target as close as you can. However, contemporary archery equipment are more efficient.

Archery, be it traditional or modern, remains to be the oldest sport in the world. Although from the start, it was applied as a weapon and not for the purpose of sports, it has evolved. Because of technological innovations, the sport has been enhanced tremendously. This means that traditional archery will never disappear, but will just improve as time goes by.
