Skiing In The Virginian Resort Of Wintergreen

By: Kerry Devere

Western Virginia is a region dominated by the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains with the vast Shenandoah Valley falling between the ranges. Characterised by its rolling hills, the central Piedmont region flattens out into the sandy coastal plain toward the great expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you are considering a ski vacation in Virginia then the place to be is in the heart of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Here you will find Wintergreen Resort which boasts the most thrilling winter recreational area in the Mid-Atlantic. It is a beautiful 11,000-acre hideaway with breathtaking mountain views, offering the ultimate getaway, with world-class skiing and snowboarding, charming lodging and first rate dining options.

With a wide selection of winter activities Wintergreen Resort still manages to achieve a refreshing atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Just 90 minutes from Richmond and roughly three hours from Washington, D.C. and North Carolina, the resort is located in the heart of Central Virginia adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Wintergreen is undoubtedly the best ski resort you will find in Virginia and very probably the single best ski resort in the south. The 25 trails and 5 lifts (with 2 high speed six person chairs) and one surface lift serve an extensive network of beginner to advanced terrain with 14 of the slopes floodlit for night time skiing.

Not all ski resorts have a good selection of slopes to cater for all abilities. Wintergreen, however, is a great all-round destination with 20% of the terrain is suitable for beginners, 40% for intermediates and 40% for advanced skiers. Wintergreen's credentials for winter sports are impressive and there is even a dedicated terrain park for snowboarding. With a top elevation of 3516 feet and a 1003 foot vertical drop, Wintergreen Resort has enormous scope for beginners and experts alike.

For the months of the year when not covered by snow there are many activities to enjoy. There are winding forest trails, cascading streams and outdoor activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, boating and hiking. The tennis facilities are second to none and the resort enjoys two golf courses with some 45 holes of championship golf as well as a mountain top spa and dining options for the most discerning guest.

Families are also able to have a great time and there are a variety of special packages and special children's programs with the goal of keeping all visitors happy throughout the year. The special children's programs allow them to learn about birds, fossils, wild flowers and stream life. To this end there are frequent guided hikes through the resort's own nature preserve.

The Outdoor Wilderness Leadership school offers corporate retreats, rappelling, mountain biking and real rock climbing. The Out of Bounds Adventure Center is a winning attraction at the resort with rock climbing and bungee trampolines.
