Memphis Offers Activities for Kids and Adults

By: Priscilla Rozee

While it is certainly unfortunate, the fact is that many vacation spots are either designed and built for children or for adults—almost never for both. It may be true that such places offer options for both adults and children but both groups are rarely happy with the results. One way or another, the adults either end up spending the majority of their vacation traversing from children's hot spot to the next or the kids become lost in a maze of boring choices and spend the majority of the vacation wandering about looking for anything to relieve their boredom.

Memphis, Tennessee, however, is not such a place. In Memphis, there really is plenty to do for both the adults and the children so that both groups will be happy. Whether the family is into rides and parks or prefers to take their fun outdoors for things like hiking, biking and other activities, there is sure to be plenty for everyone to do.

Children and parents alike will love taking a ride down the mighty Mississippi River using the River Walk. Visitors are treated to the rare pleasure of following this major river upstream and it is sure to be an adventure that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

History buffs will absolutely fall in love with the sheer possibilities that a trip to Memphis offers its visitors. The Memphis Belle, the infamous bomber made so by the Hollywood movie of the same name, is on display for all to see when they visit this historic and vibrant city.

A visit to Graceland, that mansion made so famous by the King of rock and roll, Elvis Presley is the high point of a visit to Memphis. This mansion has been preserved delicately to reflect all the details of the time when Elvis was alive. Taking part in the candlelight vigil at Graceland every 16th of August marking the death anniversary of Elvis is quite an event that draws millions of pilgrims even today.

The Peabody Hotel is certainly a place that both adults and children should find entertaining when they visit Memphis. A group of famous ducks has made a home on the roof of this famous hotel. These spoilt ducks come down in the elevator in style every morning round 10 to feed. Besides the ducks and tourists, even local big wigs find one excuse or the other to visit the hotel every year.

Libertyland Amusement park is a popular spot with children that is also closely located to entertainment spots that cater to the adults of the family. This place is reputed for its vintage 1909 carousel and does provide other popular entertainment such as midway games, rides and such other shows. Weather not permitting a visit to a park, the Children’s Museum of Memphis deserves a visit for entertaining and educational displays that are likely to keep the children highly absorbed.

And honestly, the list just goes on and on. The fact remains that Memphis is one of those rare places where absolutely everyone can find something exciting to do. Before you plan your next trip to the Memphis area, be sure to check into the wide assortment of activities offered by this exciting town before trying to decide which ones to see this year, and which ones to visit when you return—and believe me, you will return!
