The Big Island holds 11 different climate zones of the world, and if you're looking for a lot of sun and a gentle breeze, you'd probably spend most of your Hawaiian holiday on the west side of the island. The city on the west where most people end up is called Kailua-Kona. In and around Kona there are lots of beaches, where gentle waves are breaking softly onto the white, soft sand. The nature around Kona is amazingly beautiful and gives you opportunities to get into a peaceful state of mind. Kona is a relaxed and calm city, located at the foot of Hualalai volcano. This city has a lot to offer for its visitors; a good amount of hotels and vacation rentals, bars and restaurants and a lot of interesting historical sites, making it the perfect destination for your holiday. The city is ancient and a lot of the Hawaiian kings made it into their home. Later the missionaries turned this place into a seaport and built a lot of churches and houses here. The Kailua Pier is located in the middle of the city and is a must see. From this spot you have a good view over the whole area and to watch the sunset from the pier is a wonderful experience! Kona offers amazing sunsets almost every evening. Next to the pier you also find Kamakahonu Beach, which is a calm beach that offers you smooth sand and gentle waves. It's a great place to spend the day for some swimming and relaxing in the sun. Here you can also find a good range of beach activities, such as canoe rentals and snorkeling. Ali'i Drive is the main street of the city and it goes along the seafront side of Kona. Here you find a lot of restaurants, shops and hotels and you'll probably end up here at your stay in Kona. Kona is situated close to the Airport and is therefore easily accessible. It's popular to have it as your main location when you're at the Big Island and make daily trips to other areas of the island. In the area you can easily activate yourself by going on a boat cruise or by doing some hiking or horse-back riding. Kona is the great place to have as a base for your Big Island vacation. Enjoy your stay here with its perfect mixture of modern and ancient.
