We all know that compared to other dogs, Labradors can grow really big. Even with their comparatively large sizes however, a lot of families still consider them great additions to the family. This is because one great quality of the Labrador retriever is its natural friendliness. You shouldn't forget though that just like other dogs, Labradors need to be properly trained too. Here are things you need to do for Labrador retriever training.

Begin as Soon as Possible

One enduring rule in any kind of dog training is to start training during the puppy stage. Untrained dogs that grow into adulthood naturally already have set patterns of behavior that may be difficult to correct. Adult dogs are naturally already stubborn so the best time for Labrador retriever training is during the puppy years. Common sense would also tell you that it is not easy to train a fully grown adult Labrador. Even large tall people might have a hard time controlling an eager Lab that has the habit of jumping on people.

Socialize Your Lab

Like most other dogs, Labradors need to be socialized. Socialization as part of your Labrador retriever training program will help your dog get used to other animals and humans.

This part of Labrador retriever training will help your dog become comfortable with typical surroundings. Simple socialization begins by exposing your Lab to different things during walks and trips to the park. Remember though that you should pay attention to your Labrador during socialization so that you can ease its nervousness.

Leash and Basic Training

The first portion of Labrador retriever training should involve teaching it to sit, stay and come. You should however, combine this basic training with leash training. Adult Labradors who are not used to leashes may pull away from a leash. A leash resistant Lab could be a big heavy problem for you. You should want your Labrador to be comfortable with a leash early on.

One important thing to remember about Labrador retriever training is that consistency is the key. You may therefore need to involve all the members of your household in training your dog. This will ensure that whatever you impose will be supported and imposed by other members of the family. Inconsistency could muddle up your training resulting in a confused dog.

Play and Exercise

Labradors are so full of energy and enthusiasm so you would have to use up that energy in desirable behavior to stop it from developing bad patterns. One way to do that is through healthy play and exercise. You can take your Labrador along for walks or for a play session at the park. Labrador retriever training should also always involve fetch training sessions. As your dog's name would suggest, your Lab is a natural at playing fetch.

Do Not Punish

Never use punishment as part of your Labrador retriever training. You should instead employ positive reinforcement. In this method, you use a great deal of praises and occasional treats whenever your dog does something desirable. You should know though that the immediate rewards are important for positive behaviors to be reinforced.
