Ask someone that makes jewellery for sale. I bet you’ve look at those reels of beading wire and thought, hmm now that looks like fun, but what and how do I make anything with it? Want to know the secret to mastering wire? Ask the retailer, afterall, if they are selling it, chances are they know how to use it! Who better to consult than someone who makes their own jewellery and sells the beads and findings as well! If that’s the jewellery piece you want to make, at least you know where to find the required beads and findings. A reliable and trustworthy bead retailer will encourage questions and happily give you free advice, if it means traffic to their store. If you are a beginner you should be able to select the jewellery piece you would like to make, then contact the bead retailer asking what beads, head pins, eye pins, chain and other findings you will need to make that item. Better yet, they should be able to send you instructions, on how to make that item. For those of you who have a little more experience up your sleeve in beading, have a look at what jewellery takes your fancy. Study it, bit by bit. Then go off and collect the goodies you will need to make that item. And don’t forget, if you get stuck, ask the experts. Some people are not very good at visualizing the end product. You may look a range of beads you think might look great together, but can’t actually picture how they will look as a finished jewellery piece. So go the other way; find the jewellery piece, then choose the beads. At least then you know what it is going to look like! There are so many beautiful beads out there, you don’t want to buy a kilo of the same style just because they are cheap and have all your jewellery made with the same beads. Look for beads that are sold in small quantities to avoid leftovers you have no use for. That way you can buy different style beads for the same price and make different jewellery pieces. Findings should be purchased in bulk. Head pins, eye pins, crimps and jump rings are the foundations of your jewellery pieces. They can be used in many different ways to put your pieces together. Buying the basics in bulk saves you money that you can spend on glamorous beads. A professional bead retailer will also be willing to share with you their expert hints and tips. Often these hints and tips will save you time and money. Why spend money on a new gadget when an item laying around the house can do the same job? Save the money for beads, the fun stuff!
