Americans born in the year 2000 will see 33% of them being contracted with diabetes at some point in their lives. This figure is quoted by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention. What this means is that 29 million Americans will have diagnosed diabetes, and 10 million others will have undiagnosed diabetes. For a very long time, diabetes has always affected millions of people worldwide. It's not just the person who have the disease, sometimes their relatives and friends are also contracted with this deadly diabetes disease. Diabetes works by affecting a person's insulin levels within his body. What then is insulin? Insulin is a hormone which allows the glucose in the blood to enter one's body cells to be used for energy. People suffering from diabetes are very likely to have problems with their hearts, kidneys, eyes, and feet. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of deaths in Canada, and it is also causing the country a huge $9 billion in losses every year. Furthermore, people with diabetes aged between 20 and 74 are very susceptible to blindness. Even though diabetes surgery looks to be promising, we still need more data on the benefits and risks by performing such an operation on the patient. Performing surgeries to cure diabetes is definitely a good solution, but you have to remember that the results are not 100% guaranteed. Type 2 diabetes sufferers, however, can't have surgeries done on them. On the other hand, type 1 diabetes sufferers are a little more fortunate - they can have diabetic surgeries. Surgeons performing operations on obese people with diabetes had noticed in around 98% of cases the patients' diabetes condition spontaneously vanished a few weeks after surgery, which is too soon to be accounted for by their weight loss. Moreover, other diabetes physicians feel that diabetic surgery should only be considered as "a last resort" after pioneering research on patients by an international team of doctors claim it can really cure the illness. Since diabetes is a global illness feared everywhere in the world, it must be treated at the earliest possible time once a person is diagnosed with the disease. Diabetes will cause long term health issues and problems, hence it is imperative that we continue to educate ourselves with the latest developments on diabetes. This is very important if we want to survive and lead healthy lives.
